Advocate Mian Qayoom re-elected as Bar president.

Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association (Srinagar) here Monday re-elected leading lawyer, Mian Abdul Qayoom as its president.

Advocate Qayoom won over former Bar General Secretary Advocate G N Shaheen by a margin of 197 votes. Qayoom got 429 out of the total 664 votes polled while Shaheen bagged 232 votes.

Results of polls for the executive body of the Bar Association were declared by its Election Commission this evening soon after counting of votes was concluded at Sadder Court Complex, Sanat Ghar Bemina here.

Advocate Qayoom won over former Bar General Secretary Advocate G N Shaheen by a margin of 197 votes. Qayoom got 429 out of the total 664 votes polled while Shaheen bagged 232 votes. Three votes were declared rejected.

For the position of vice president, Advocate Aijaz Ahmad Bedar won over his rival Abdul Ahad Rather by a margin of 322 votes. Bedar secured 496 while Rather got 174.

In the direct contest between Advocate Bashir Sidiq and Muhammad Ashraf Wani for the post of general secretary, the former defeated the latter by a margin of 177 votes. Sidiq bagged 416 votes while Wani secured 239 out of the total 674 votes polled. Four votes were rejected.

For the post of joint secretary Anwar-Ul-Islam Shaheen defeated his rival candidate Shafaqat Nazir by a margin of 120 votes. Shaheen got 374 out of 637 votes polled while Nazir secured 254 votes. Nine votes were rejected.

For the post of treasurer, Hamid Shafi had already won the election as uncontested.

Elected for first time in 1986 as HCBA president, Advocate Qayoom was re-elected HCBA president for 16 times except the periods for which he was jailed or did not contest the elections.

Soon after he was declared as victorious in the polls, Advocate Mian Abdul Qayoom addressing a gathering of lawyers said that the ongoing freedom struggle will remain priority of the Bar.

“I assure you that Bar Association will continue to pursue with efforts in this regard like we did in the past. I assure you to come up to your expectations,” Qayoom said in his address.
